Lion Dance in Chinese New Year

One of my favorite things about Chinese New Year is… Lion Dances!

Lion dance is a traditional dance common in Chinese culture and other Asian countries, and is considered a must in order to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck and fortune. The performers imitate the movement of a lion and also dress up like one! Growing up, I loved seeing lion dances. The dancers are pretty impressive to me honestly because of how they carried themselves throughout the performance (and if watch one of the videos you will understand… it is really so much work from their end!).

It can be pretty difficult to watch a lion dance when you are not in Asia, so I would suggest the following videos to watch with your little ones if you want to introduce this part of Chinese New Year culture to them. I watched these videos with Ray and he was totally mesmerized, and kept saying lion in Chinese while we were watching them!

You might even be able to do a lion dance with your little ones if you desire. I will share more on how you can do it perhaps in a later post.

Below are some interesting videos on lion dances. Enjoy 🙂
